NDS Executive Leaders Conference 2024 Summary

NDS Executive Leaders Conference 2024

I recently attended the NDS Executive Leaders Conference 2024 in Adelaide (December 9-10), and I feel it was a very pivotal event for the disability services sector, given the number of attendees and their positions. Over 600 sector leaders discussed the theme ‘The Path Forward’, providing valuable insights into the future of disability services in Australia.   With a focus on the NDIS sector, it was great to receive validation that the services we are providing – helping providers with automation, metrics, compliance, cost and other areas are in line with the necessary changes providers must take to survive and thrive.

State of the Disability Sector Report

  •       A significant highlight was the launch of the NDS State of the Disability Sector Report 2024. The report projects a precarious outlook for the sector’s future viability and highlights the urgent need for sustainable services for people with disabilities.

  •       Benchmark highlights FY24:  operating margin -3.2%, disability revenue percentage operating revenue 67.1% make an operating loss, 55.7% make a total loss, and finally, 21% strongly agree that NDIS providers are considering getting out of the industry

Embracing ‘Sustainovation’

The concept of ‘sustainovation’—integrating sustainability with innovation—was a focal point. Sessions demonstrated how adopting new technologies and creative approaches can lead to sustainable, high-quality services. Speakers encouraged organisations to continually renew their strategies to adapt to the evolving landscape

Empowering Future Leaders

A compelling address by disability advocate Charlotte Young emphasised the importance of engaging in ‘productive discomfort’ and empowering future leaders by listening to young people with disability. This session highlighted the need for inclusive leadership and the value of diverse perspectives in driving sector reform.

Attending the NDS Executive Leaders Conference 2024 provided invaluable insights into the disability services sector’s current challenges and future directions. The emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and inclusive leadership will undoubtedly inform NDIS provider’s strategic initiatives moving forward and help validate the necessity for laser-sharp operations.  As Michael Perusco, CEO of the NDS said, “Innovation, quality improvements and operational efficiencies need sophisticated data and systems”.
